Layer semantics: historical geometry is filtered by the year slider. Modern TIGER/reference boundaries are reference-current and appear only when the Modern reference layer is enabled. Undated Place points are labeled as lacking a governed visibility interval rather than being assigned an invented historical date.

Sources

Browse Discover Florida History’s governed source catalog by family. Catalog status, source access, and Fact extraction coverage are maintained independently.

Source catalog coverage
Governed catalog status is separate from Fact extraction status. Cataloged sources remain visible even when no Facts have yet been extracted.

About Discover Florida History

Discover Florida History is an evidence-first research platform designed to help historians move quickly from a question to the people, places, primary and secondary sources, and finding aids that can support their work.

A project for future research. Discover Florida History has been prepared by John E. Nelson for the benefit of historians and other researchers in their future projects. Its purpose is to make the dispersed literature and documentary record of Florida history faster to discover, connect, and investigate—not to replace the historian's judgment or the underlying sources.

A faster path to the sources

Florida history is spread across books, journal articles, theses and dissertations, archival collections, transcriptions, catalogs, digital repositories, and finding aids. Discover Florida History brings those materials into a connected research environment so a researcher can begin with a person, place, period, topic, source, or historical fact and move outward from there.

The site is especially intended to shorten the early stages of a research project: identifying what has already been written, locating likely primary sources, finding archival or catalog access points, and discovering people, places, and related evidence that may not have been obvious at the outset.

How Discover Florida History works

FactsHistorical statements extracted from identified sources, with links back to their supporting evidence.
People & PlacesCanonical identities connect names and locations across sources so researchers can follow evidence beyond a single publication.
SourcesBooks, chapters, journal articles, theses, archival materials, transcriptions, and other governed Source Items with access and finding-aid links where available.
Research ContextPersistent Person, Place, Geo Hierarchy, Date/Period, Topic, Source, and Source Item filters let the same question carry across the site.
ContributorsAuthors, editors, translators, compilers, and other contributors are linked to the publications represented in the collection.
Research GuidesDFH analyzes the literature it has inventoried to suggest research topics, show scholarship about people and places, and provide useful starting filters.

Evidence first

Discover Florida History is designed around provenance. A historical fact should lead back to a governed Source Item and, where possible, onward to the original publication, archival record, transcription, repository, catalog record, or finding aid.

The platform distinguishes the historical assertion from the source that supports it. It also distinguishes access from reuse rights: being able to read something online does not necessarily mean it may be republished without restriction.

GreenReuse generally permitted under the governed rights profile.
YellowConditions or restrictions require attention.
RedReuse is restricted.
GrayRights have not yet been sufficiently assessed.

Research Guides and historiographic coverage

Research Guides uses the growing inventory of books, book chapters, journal articles, theses, and dissertations to help researchers see what subjects have received substantial attention and where the current DFH inventory is thinner.

Topics can be browsed directly. People can be searched to see dedicated biographies and substantial studies identified about them. Places can be searched for dedicated county, city, community, or regional histories. Research paths can then apply useful Research Context filters and move directly into the evidence.

Research coverage is descriptive, not absolute. “No coverage identified” means that no directly relevant publication has been identified in the current Discover Florida History inventory. It does not mean that no such scholarship exists elsewhere.

An expanding research corpus

Discover Florida History is a work in progress. Some sources are fully cataloged and parsed into historical facts; others have been inventoried but not yet fully processed. New books, articles, theses, archival materials, contributors, identities, places, and relationships continue to be added.

For that reason, an empty search result should not be interpreted as proof that no historical evidence exists. It may instead mean that the relevant source has not yet been discovered, cataloged, parsed, or connected to the appropriate person, place, or topic.

The underlying source remains the authority. DFH is a discovery and research-assistance system. Researchers should consult and cite the original source appropriate to their work and independently evaluate the evidence and interpretations they use.

Collaboration, corrections, and additions

Collaboration is welcome. Historians, archivists, librarians, local-history organizations, students, and other researchers are invited to suggest missing sources, biographies, local histories, finding aids, corrections, or other improvements that can make the platform more useful for future research.
